Adventures in getting a new computer
January 1, 2008
Upon the advice of an online friend, I purchased a lovely new PC (WinXP please) from AVADirect. Usual delivery time seemed to be a week or so, but mine took three weeks.
Ok, Big computer box arrives ups and i get it out, wipe all the peanuts off, plug it in! woohoo! Download mouse driver and G15 driver. BSOD when i start installing the mouse driver. Hmmm. Reboot. BSOD when I start installing G15 driver. Ouch! Copy over WoW. Start wow. Beautiful with all the graphics settings on high. Oops! BSOD! Try again. BSOD. Replug in old PC and start the service process.
Next 2 days: install uninstall install uninstall driver this driver that. Always eventual BSOD. Unhappy customer. Underclock my processor and ram via BIOS. BSOD. Livid customer. Today, "tech guy" comes to my house. Handsome, works out. Not overly bright. Removes case cover, pokes around a little. Watch me start wow and hellgate and lock up. "Need a new video card and ram. I'll let them know." Leaves.
Me, a little irked he didn't put case cover back on. So i start looking at my expensive brink. In wowchat, I mention what a friggin HUGE cpu heatsink i have. "So big, they have to prop it up with foam and stuff. Maybe sound dampening or something." Everyone on KMA replies at once, "OMG! Foam? Next to your heat sink? TAKE IT OUT!" "Really? but the tech guy was just here and he didnt say anything." "TAKE IT OUT!" "Well, ok. I'll take out a few of the pieces." Takes one of the foam pieces out. Main outfacing fan starts rotating. Ooh? Take out another piece. Top outward facing fan starts going. Holy shit! Call the tech guy. "Ever seen foam in a case?" "Um I saw all that but figured it belonged in there." D'oh! Nice ass, bad brain!
Apparently, my pc was protecting itself from overheating by shutting down. Thank goodness it didnt have a gun to protect itself. "Sensing Problem.... Problem Identified... <bang> Problem Remediated"
I can't believe there is nothing that says, "Hey open the case and remove the shipping / packing foam we put in there to protect stuff during the UPS treatment!"
